The house as a system:

There are many areas in a house (as well as a building) that are susceptible to heat loss and air infiltration (air leaks). Click on the diagram above to view these common areas, and the direction of heat flow.  Affordable Energy Solutions can locate these problematic areas and solve the issue, helping you save on energy costs.

Common problematic areas in a house or building:

Areas lacking insulation:

Digital photo of the upper corner of a room with a slanted ceiling. Common construction practice, especially in older homes.

Infrared digital picture showing heat loss through the walls caused by lack of insulation.  Darker shade shows heat escaping through walls.

Infrared digital picture of the same walls after work is completed. Lighter shade shows much less heat loss.

Another common location for heat loss (or cold air loss in summer) is open cavities leading into the attic and out of the house or building. Our technicians can locate, insulate, and seal these areas.

Snow melting patterns and ice damming:

These photos show snow melting patterns on rooftops, which is evidence of a poorly insulated ceiling. In these three cases, heat is escaping out of the house and into the attic, which melts the snow on the roof. The lack of insulation causes high heating costs, as well as ice damming issues.

Moisture-related problems:

This picture (left) shows an improperly installed exhaust vent. The moisture is not being exhausted out of the house or building, which causes deterioration of the wood as well as mold/mildew problems.

Condensation between window panes (right) is a sign that the window is defective. This causes higher rates of heat loss during winter months and cold air loss during summer months.

Improper water drainage around the foundation (left) can lead to moisture problems in the inside walls of lower levels and basements.

Safety and air quality:

Rusted flue pipes and other leaky piping can cause safety and indoor air quality problems such as potential carbon monoxide poisoning. It can also contribute to moisture problems in the building.

Post work done by our energy efficiency experts:

Furnace and water heater:

We can help you determine if an Energy Star® rated, high-efficiency furnace or water heater replacement is recommended. We will look at your current efficiency rating and monthly energy costs, and provide you with information on replacement costs and economic payback periods.

Insulate and air-tight seal openings and cavities:

These photos show open cavities that have been insulated and foam-sealed by our technicians. This greatly reduces heat loss and air infiltration, which also lowers energy costs.

Exterior wall and ceiling insulation:

Our technicians can test your house or building to determine if it is properly insulated. AES can also provide insulation services if needed.
